The gentle patter of rain tapped against the windows. The bedroom was silent, an early morning. You woke up when the rain stopped, the sun's rays shining in your direction. The strong arms that were wrapped around your torso kept you warm. It also made you feel safe.

Somebody's breathing tickled the nape of your neck. That somebody was named Gilbert. He was your boyfriend of three years. His slow, steady breaths and his warm embrace was your comfort. But you knew that he was going to leave soon.

"Gil..." You murmured as you shifted your position. His deep breathing came to a stop, being replaced by a moan. You watched his crimson eyes slowly open.

"Hey."

"Hey, liebe." He muttered and gave you a kiss. "What time is it?" He asked with his raspy voice while stretching a bit. You glanced at the clock. "Time to get ready."

This was the day Gilbert had to head off to war.

The two of you stood at the train station. Those trains were going to take the soldiers off to fight. A breeze of cool wind blew in the air, making your hair flow. You stood on your tiptoes to adjust the collar on Gilbert's uniform. "Th-there..."

You already could feel tears stinging your eyes, but you didn't hesitate to let them go. Gilbert looked down at you.

"Don't cry, you're making me sad too." He softly chuckled and wiped your tears away. But the tears kept streaming down your cheeks; you couldn't stop yourself from crying. You couldn't stand the idea of being without Gilbert. He began to feel bad when he realized you weren't going to stop crying.

"_________, I want you to have this." He pulled out a small plush bird from his pocket, Gilbird.

"B-but Gil, you had this since you were a little boy. I can't take this from you..." You say in grief. Sadness welled in your eyes. He insisted and placed the bird in your palms. You've never seen Gilbert so genuine and sincere for the longest time.

"Keep it. Have something to remember me by... in case I don't make it..."

"Gilbert Beilschmidt! Don't say that!! I know for a fact you'll make it... because you're awesome!" You joked, trying to lighten up.

"Fight for your country! Fight for Prussia! I want you to live long, Gilbert."

"Kesesese! You're right! I will fight, and I will fight for you." His usual smile made an appearance once again.

"Soldiers! We are boarding now!" The officer barked.

Gilbert lets out a long sigh, "Alright. Guess this is really it." The joyous expression on his face vanished. You suddenly ran into him, giving him the tightest hug. He hugged back with the same tenderness.

"_________, Ich liebe dich so sehr. Stay safe." (1) Gilbert caressed your cheek and kissed the top of your head. "Ich liebe dich auch, Gilbert." (2) You told him in his native tongue. "Come back, and please be careful."

You gave him one final kiss on the lips. "See you later, meine dame." He winked.

And then... he made his way towards the waiting train.

*****  5 YEARS LATER *****

You are sitting by the fire place, bundled in a blanket from the cold. A steaming mug of tea keeps your hands warm. You watch the flames crackle and burn; the beautiful colors mesmerizing you.

In the winter, you'd always watch the fire with Gilbert, hand in hand. Now the spot next to you is empty. The phone rings and catches you off guard, pulling you away from your thoughts. You sigh and place the mug down as you push off the blankets. You hold the phone to your ear and wait for the unknown person to answer.

Your stomach drops as you listen to the voice on the other line. Your face pales real fast. Your knees suddenly don't feel as strong as they should. Then the call ends. It was the call of dread. The conversation nobody wants to hear.

Prussia... is no longer a country.

Gilbert is gone.

All the Prussians... are gone.

The phone slips from your grasp and clatters onto the wooden floor. You trudge back to the sofa with all hopes gone. Time seems to be frozen in place.

Your body trembles as you take out the small bird called Gilbird you keep in your pocket. Fresh tears roll down your cheeks endlessly, landing on the plush that's in your tight grip.

"Gilbert, I told you to come back..."

- the end ♥

Alrighty, everyone. This is an entry for Ayano-Otori 's contest.

There are many reasons why I wanted you to read the description first, so thank you very much for doing so. :D I don't know anything about history. This is probably inaccurate, so I'm sorry!! All I know is that Prussia fell in the Franco-Prussian war...?

Please tell me if there's any grammar mistakes, I'll be glad to fix them! Especially the German I used... I don't speak it :^(

Translations:

1. _________, I love you so much. Stay safe.
2. I love you too, Gilbert.

Thank you for reading! :D
