The day began when you woke up. It made you sad sometimes. You could never tell what time of day it was. Morning or night. Light or dark. Your vision was taken away from you a couple years back. As a child, you were unfortunately diagnosed with a condition called Retinis Pigmentosa. But you never thought you would go blind in the feature.
The remaining senses you had grown stronger since you couldn't see anymore. Feeling, tasting, and hearing especially have improved over the years.
It was always a bit of a hassle to go through your daily routine. But you had enough trust for Antonio to help you bathe and get dressed. He would tell you numerous times that he didn't mind helping you out.
Earlier that morning, you two were getting ready to go out. "I can do this myself~" You told him when he draped a thin sweater over your shoulders. "Oh... okay. Sigas. " Antonio stepped back.
You stuck your arms in the sleeves and got ready to button the front up. You ran your fingertips over the buttons and holes, locating them, and tried your best to match them. "Does it look good?" You asked when finished.
Antonio looked over at you before saying, "Ay, si! You finally got it!!" He ran over to you and hugged you tightly. You giggled. "You're so silly, Toni. "
"Antonio?" You called out. You sat in the passenger seat and reached an arm out, feeling the air for your lover. A big, warm hand shortly clasped yours in response. "I'm right here, amor. " His familiar voice sounded. It was a beautiful sound for you to hear, the Spanish accent tinged within. A smile danced across your lips.
You were so happy; so very, very happy that Antonio stayed with you. Despite all your problems and issues, he never left you hanging. That's how much he loved you. You weren't able to see, but he smiled back at you.
"Where are we going?" You questioned. The only thing you would ever see were clouds of blackness; blocking the bright and colorful world around you. And you feared that it would last for the rest of your life.
"It's a surprise~" The Spaniard answered as he started the car's engine. He used his thumb and began to stroke the hand he was holding. Your hand. Then he drove off.
The sounds of distant voices from people chatting and the waves roaring to the shore filled the warm, salt scented air. The beach.
Antonio held your hand, guiding you through the sand that felt cool under your bare feet. He sat you down in a cozy spot by the coast, the ocean's tides gently licking your toes.
You sighed. An almost sad sounding noise.
"I wish I was normal... I wish that I didn't need help with every single thing I did. I wish I could be more independent than I am now."
"But you buttoned up your own sweater today, corazón. You did it all by yourself. I didn't help you at all. I'm sure you'll learn how to do more things yourself little by little. It just takes time and practice. That's all."
"I know, you're right. But... I want to drive to new places again. See and discover things I never knew. And most of all... I want to see you, Antonio. See you with both my eyes, and finally stop imagining what you look like." You sighed once more. "I'm sorry for my complaining..."
"Ay chica, I didn't know you would ever complain about anything! Well, I'm glad you told me this. It's never a bad thing to complain every once in awhile. Just let it all out when you need to. Remember, I'll always be there for you."
"Thanks a lot, Toni. You're the best novio." You found his hand and slipped yours into his. "De nada. Tú eres la major novia." He replied using his native language.
"How come you didn't wear your sunglasses today?" Your once beautiful eyes were now glazed with a dual film, staring straight ahead with a blank expression. "I just wanted to try a day without them. Because, why not?" You shrugged. "I love you, Toni. You helped me a lot with everything."
"Ti amo mucho tambien, mi amor." Antonio leaned in for a kiss he couldn't resist. You were caught by surprise, but you were getting used to these sudden kisses. You found that he did this often.
"You taste like churros. " You told Antonio pulling back, earning a warm hearted laugh from him. "See? Your sense of taste is getting better!"
"Toni, what do you look like?" You asked him with curiosity synced in your voice.
"Want me to tell you again? Well... I have green eyes and brown hair. My skin is tanned, because I'm from España! And I am also about 5'10. Is that a good description?" "Yes... you sound perfect." You smiled to yourself.
Long moments of silence stretched by. It wasn't uncomfortable, but, it was actually nice. A good silence. A silence to sit down and get lost in your thoughts.
The voices of neighboring crowds of friendly people gradually died down and quieted. The ocean still roared away.
"I want to see again. I want to change."
It was the day of your birthday. You were finally going to receive the present you wanted for so many years. Vision. Sight. The ability to see anything.
"I love you, ___________." Antonio bent down to the level of the hospital bed. He kissed you and caressed your cheek. "Love you back." "Have a safe surgery." Antonio watched the doctors take you into the operating room.
You had a smile on, listening to the sound of the bed's wheels roll against the tile floor.
