The day begins when you wake up. It makes you sad sometimes. You can never tell what time of day it was. Morning or night. Light or dark. Your vision was taken away from you a couple years back. As a child, you were diagnosed with a condition called Retinis Pigmentosa. But you never thought you would go blind in the feature.
The remaining senses you have grow stronger since you can't see anymore. Feeling, tasting, and hearing especially have improved over the years.
It's always a bit of a hassle to go through your daily routine. But you have enough trust in Antonio to help you bathe and get dressed. He tells you numerous times that he doesn't mind helping you out.
Earlier this morning, you two were getting ready to go out. "I can do this myself." You tell him when he draped a thin sweater over your shoulders. "Oh... okay. Sigas. " Antonio says, stepping back.
You stick your arms in the sleeves and get ready to button the front up. You run your fingertips over the buttons and holes, locating them, and try to match them. "Does it look good?" You ask when finished.
Antonio looks over at you before saying, "Ay, si! You finally got it!!" He runs over to you and hugs you tightly. You giggle. "You're so silly, Toni. "
"Antonio?" You call out. You sit in the passenger seat and reach an arm out, feeling for your lover. A big, warm hand shortly clasps yours in response. "I'm right here, amor. " His familiar voice sounds. It is a beautiful sound for you to hear, the Spanish accent tinged within. A smile dances across your lips.
You're so happy; so very, very happy that Antonio stays with you. Despite all your problems and issues, he never left you hanging. That's how much he loves you. You aren't able to see, but he smiles back at you.
"Where are we going?" You question. The only thing you can ever see are clouds of blackness; blocking the bright and colorful world around you. And you fear that it's going to last for the rest of your life.
"It's a surprise." The Spaniard answers as he starts the car's engine. He uses his thumb to stroke the hand he's holding. Your hand. Then he drives off.
Sounds of distant voices from people chatting and the waves roaring to the shore fills the warm, salt scented air.
Antonio holds your hand, guiding you through the sand that feels cool under your bare feet. He sits you down in a cozy spot by the coast, the ocean's tides gently licking your toes.
You sigh. An almost sad sounding noise.
"I wish I was normal... I wish that I didn't need help with every single thing I did. I wish I could be more independent than I am now."
"But you buttoned up your own sweater today, corazón. You did it all by yourself. I didn't help you at all. I'm sure you'll learn how to do more things yourself little by little. It just takes time and practice. That's all."
"I know, you're right. But... I want to drive to new places again. See and discover new things. And most of all... I want to see you, Antonio. See you with both my eyes, and finally stop imagining what you look like. I'm sorry for the rant..."
"Ay chica! Well, you do get your point across. I'm glad you told me this. It's never a bad thing to complain every once in awhile. Just let it all out when you need to. Remember, I'll always be there for you."
"Thanks a lot, Toni. You're the best novio." You find his hand and slip yours into his. "De nada. Tú eres la major novia."
"Hey, how come you didn't wear your sunglasses today?" Your eyes are glazed with a dual film, staring straight ahead with a blank expression. "I just wanted to try a day without them. Because, why not?" You shrug. "I love you, Toni. You helped me a lot with everything."
"Ti amo mucho tambien, mi amor." Antonio leans in for a kiss he can't resist. You're caught by surprise, but you are getting used to these sudden kisses. You find that he does this often.
"Toni, what do you look like?" You ask him with curiosity synced in your voice.
"Want me to tell you again? Well... I have green eyes and brown hair. My skin is tanned, because I'm from España. And I am also about 5'10. Is that a good description?"
"Yes... you sound perfect."
Long moments of silence stretch by. It isn't uncomfortable, but, it is actually nice. A good silence. A silence to sit down and get lost in your thoughts.
The voices of neighboring crowds of people gradually die down. The ocean still roars away.
"I want to see again. I want to change."
It is the day of your birthday. You are finally going to receive the present you wanted for so many years. Vision. Sight. The ability to see anything.
"I love you, ___________."
Antonio bends down to the level of the hospital bed. He kisses you and caresses your cheek.
"Love you back."
"Have a safe surgery."
Antonio watches the doctors take you into the operating room.
You have a smile on, listening to the sound of the bed's wheels roll against the tile floor.
